To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, Louis Vuitton has launched a series of global initiatives, including transforming two historic trams in Milan.

Until January 28, 2025, two of Milan’s historic trams were customized with Murakami’s iconic designs in partnership with ATM.

The cinema tram, departing from Piazza Castello, features an exterior wrapped in the vibrant Multicolor print and an interior adorned in blue. During the journey, passengers can enjoy video projections and animations created by the artist, exploring the connection between his imaginative world and the Louis Vuitton universe.

The literary café tram, departing from Piazza Fontana, offers a soft pink oasis with branded sofas and round tables. Visitors can browse art books dedicated to Japan and indulge in breakfast or afternoon tea inspired by Tokyo’s charming café culture.

A HISTORIC COLLABORATION

The partnership between Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami began in 2003 when then-creative director Marc Jacobs invited the artist to reinterpret the Maison’s classic monogram. The result was the “Monogram Multicolore” collection, an explosion of vibrant colours that redefined the concept of luxury, blending contemporary art and high fashion.

REVIVING THE COLLABORATION

As part of the celebration, Louis Vuitton has released a re-edition of its collaboration with Murakami, featuring over 200 items, including bags, accessories, footwear, and lifestyle products. This new collection reimagines the original designs, incorporating contemporary artistic and technological elements while preserving the essence of their groundbreaking partnership.

GLOBAL EVENTS

In addition to the Milan initiatives, Louis Vuitton has organized events in other cities worldwide. In New York, for instance, a pop-up store has opened in Soho, where visitors can explore archive pieces and participate in interactive experiences tied to Murakami’s creative universe.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Admission is free but requires online reservations. While spots are still available for the cinema tram (book here), the literary café tram has already been sold out for many time slots. New availabilities may be announced in the coming weeks (check here).
